| Biography: |
After attending college and graduating with a major in business administration and a minor in history, Scott Reece was unsure what he wanted to do with his life. He was a pretty good athlete but didn't excel at any sport enough to be a part of a team. One thing he did excel at was loving professional wrestling. Speed and his good college friends, Violet Morris and J.T. Jasxon all would get together every Monday night to watch the top wrestling promotions of the time and their TV shows, wishing they could be a part of it. To make a long story short, Scott quit his post-college dayjob after saving plenty of money and attended wrestling school in North Carolina under the tutelage of one of his idols, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. Steamboat saw loads of potential in Scott, and was quite content to train this kid, thinking that maybe he could bring some legitimacy back to the sport of wrestling which was waning in popularity a little bit. Who would have thought how right Ricky was too! After just one year of training, Scott took the name of "Arsenal" and started wowing indie league crowds with some fine technical wrestling. He wasn't as high-flying then as he became later in his career, but he still had decent success with the technical attack. He never won any belts in these feds, but he was simply out to furthur his career and gain experience, not really worried about gold. And then he got a phone call one fateful September morning. It was a man named Ken who would go on to become the legendary Dark Church leader, the Dark Rogue. He and Scott had actually been friends for many years, but lost touch as Scott went to college and started his wrestling career. Sure enough, Ken had done the same thing, training and wrestling in Louisiana indie feds for a couple of years. He had heard of Arsenal's success in the Carolinas and when he realized that he was a long lost friend, he called as soon as he could. This call changed the life of Arsenal. Ken called to say that he had just been accepted into a big national promotion known as World Hardcore Championship Wrestling. And he was told to gather together a few good wrestlers to form a stable known as the Dark Church....a dark, mysterious heel group. Without a thought, Scott accepted, gave Ricky Steamboat his goodbyes and appreciation and flew to Louisiana to begin training with the man who would become the Dark Rogue. In order to get some training for this big moment, however, the two and whomever else they planned on bringing into their stable had to wrestle in some of the WHCW endorsed minors for a month or two. In a little known fact, which we will verify here as it has been rumored for many years, Speed first posed as the Original Black Knight in the minor indy leagues known as the TeWA and RWA. He was allied with the Dark Rogue and a martial arts specialist from Asia whose gimmick was the Black Mage. They also had a couple youngsters with them in the indies who ultimately failed to make the WHCW cut, The Shadowalker and Poltergeist. Speed was gaining some great experience and enjoyed being the part of a stable that truly did raise the ire of the indie fans. Unfortunately, a horrible thing happened mere days before the Church were finally ready to be brought up to the WHCW ranks. The Dark Rogue and Black Mage were wrestling an indy team known as The Mob, and one Mob member, Silvio Morelli, had the advantage over the Rogue. He lifted the Rogue to the top turnbuckle and executed a devastating reverse DDT from the top rope....unfortunately, there was some miscommunication and the Rogue landed right on the top of his head, severely injuring his back and neck. Oddly enough, the Rogue eventually perfected that very same move which would become known as his patented Backstab. However, Scott and the Mage still got the call to move up to the WHCW even without the injured Rogue, and they reluctantly did so with the Rogue's blessing. However, the WHCW brass wanted Scott to be the leader of this group that Ken would have led, and asked him to come up with a new identity. He was told the Dark Church stable idea would be scrapped however he could still have the Black Mage in whatever his new stable would be. This was a lot for Speed to handle. He had to form a stable, but only had himself and the Black Mage in it. So he tracked down some of the best indy wrestlers he could find who might be interested in being with him and his group. The WHCW offered to have a new tag team they had just signed to join Scott's group, The Saiyans. This was also when they came up with the idea for Scott to adjust his last name a bit and be known as Scott "Speed" Racer for marketing purposes. Not really with other options, and not wanting to be typecast as Arsenal, his indie identity, Scott accepted. He also discovered a very powerful wrestler named Jake Page whom he thought would be perfect to fill the shoes of the Black Knight and team up with the Black Mage. To fill out his stable, Speed went back to his roots in Ricky Steamboat's school and remembered two young guys who wrestled as the hapless, but hilarious, Dateless Losers. While this may not have been something to scare away opponents, Speed wanted to give those two a shot at the wrestling biz. He also brought in an indy wrestler from Scotland named Kayin Macleod whom he thought would be great to round out his stable. Scott in a short time and out of an emergency, really organized some semblance of a stable in one week. And..... the initial stint went very horribly. The Dateless Losers, well, lost, as their name said. Surprisingly, Loser member Matt "Funklord" White got more heat than the rest of the stable as he rocketed into an angle with sultry WHCW announcer, Nikki Kurosawa. However the WHCW was still less than thrilled with the Losers and canned them in short order. Kayin MacLeod wrestled inconsistently and never even won a match before he too got canned by the WHCW. Since it was a major league they only wanted the best of the best and the aforementioned three simply couldn't make the cut. The Knight & Mage, Might & Magic as they were known, got some title shots, but always fell short against some VERY stiff competition, and the Saiyans usually did respectably, but also fell short in the big matches. However these 2 teams were impressive enough to have lengthy WHCW careers. Speed's stable had been pared down to 5, but this was for the best and for months, they wrestled WHCW undercard matches as all members, none of whom were vets of the squared circle, honed their skills. This was also where Scott met one of his good friends throughout his wrestling career, the man known as Unleaded. Unleaded had a decent stable of his own, but he and Scott never actually wrestled in the WHCW. They simply became pals in the locker room and respected what each other brought to the WHCW....and both had dreams of superstardom in a fed one day. Unleaded petitioned Speed to join the WWPA, a VERY high-profile league where all the big names in wrestling were, and met some of his greatest allies there, Kid Nitro, Holocaust and Cardiac, and also some major enemies, Diamond Dallas Page, and Holocaust and Cardiac. Those 2 could be his best friends and his worst enemies all at once. Speed had trouble there at first, but won some pretty big matches and was about to start a very good program with Nitro.......and then in December of '96 it disbanded, and Speed needed time off to revisualize his dream. He did keep in touch with Nitro, Holocaust and Cardiac while still wrestling part time in the WHCW as he recovered from some nagging injuries. Upon his return to wrestling in January, he started winning more and more in the WHCW partly as a reward for Speed slowly improving his mic skills and as fan interest with the smaller WHCW wrestlers increased. He also joined a brand new league, the EEMWF, and tried to rekindle his old gimmick, Arsenal, but the fans and EEMWF hierarchy wanted Speed to be Speed. He abided and defeated the tough Force Of One in his first EEMWF match. This is where his mark would be made. His success in the WHCW was still on and off, but in the EEMWF, he shot up the rankings, and very soon, became a legitimate contendor to both the World Heavyweight AND Cruiserweight belts. He got to work programs with Kid Nitro, Holocaust and Cardiac that they planned on working in the WWPA months earlier and all were happy with the EEMWF"s success in general. The first few months of 1997 were the best of his career at that point as well as the rest of the Legion's. In the EEMWF, Speed brought in Power & Glory (Hercules and Grant Morris), and quickly they won EEMWF Tag Gold, the first time Speed helped lead a team (or anyone including himself) to gold. And Speed finally followed suit and gained his very first title, the EEMWF Intercontinental Title, on his 27th birthday. He had fallen out of contention for the World Title, but he was extremely psyched to win the second best thing and had no complaints whatsoever. This winning streak and confidence from the EEMWF carried over to the WHCW where he started pulling off some upsets. He defeated Adam Flash twice, a top wrestler in the WHCW. And also The Saiyans, in March of '97, finally won their long-overdue WHCW Tag Team Championship. Things were looking good for Speed, his stablemates and all of his friends. In fact, Speed was so confident in his abilities, he decided to start his own wrestling promotion in February of '97....before he had won his first gold. He figured if he couldn't succeed as a wrestler, he would be a promoter instead. Anything Goes Wrestling was the name, suggested by Saiyan member Son Goku, and it was a place where some of the best from the EEMWF, WHCW and the old defunct WWPA could compete along with anyone new who wished a shot at a wrestling league. Of course, the AGW's history could be discussed at length but we will avoid it here. It is an important part to Speed's success and he definitely doesn't regret starting it up. In fact, it became the true home of his friends whom he was supposed to start a stable in the WHCW, the Dark Church. The AGW and Speed gave them a bigger opportunity than the WHCW offered and they took advantage, putting out some great, exciting matches. And no, Speed merely gave them a chance to shine, he didn't give them anything else, including titles. Speed is a man who believes in people earning things. Back to his career IN the ring, Speed decided that decent success in the WHCW and EEMWF wasn't enough. Unleaded recommended Speed go to the TWD, a fed based out of Canada. And for this Speed will forever be grateful to the big guy. The TWD was an excellent federation that gave everyone a fair shot at success and was truly one of the best wrestling leagues ever. Speed worked his way up the rankings there along with the British team, the Warriors Of Eternity, who were part of his Legion, and between the EEMWF and TWD over the next year, Speed had gained the bulk of his career title victories. 1997 was easily Speed's best year in the wrestling biz, culminating in a ranking of 45th in the world on the 1997 RSPWF awards....not an easy list to make, much less be in the top 50 of. His peers judged him that good and he ranked higher than any of the men he wrestled with or against. Unfortunately, after that high point of his career in '97 and going into '98, some nagging injuries finally took their toll on Speed....but not before he simultaneously held the EEMWF World Title and the TWDominator Title in June of 1998, the two highest belts of those respective feds. In fact, Speed had the second longest reign for a TWDominator ever, second only to the great Mad Dog Colletti. Unleaded definitely pushed Speed to have a good run as the Dominator and even put Speed over in a Dominator title defense. However, the rigorous schedule of wrestling in 3 feds was taking it's toll mentally and physically on Speed and by the end of '98, Speed had become angered with the politics of the WHCW and decided to leave it mere weeks before he was scheduled for a WHCW World Title reign he'd earned. And months later, Speed had to leave the EEMWF and TWD for a period to recover from injuries. So 1998 saw Speed working mainly behind the scenes of the AGW more since he had some injury time to do so. By the time 1999 came around, the EEMWF had gone defunct and the TWD fans didn't quite buy into him like they used to....Speed's career was not going so well, and even after a very brief yet successful stint in Kid Nitro's NEWF in which his legendary feud with Most Holy had started, Speed decided to just wrestle part time if at all. In the summer of '99 he joined the TMW after the NEWF and TWD closed down, however the same politics that brought the WHCW brought the TMW down, namely Speed's long-time backstage nemesis, King James. Speed hated James from his early 1996 days and knew he was an idiot....and as time moved on, James proves that he indeed, was an idiot. He tried rekindling the WWPA and even gave Speed and his friends some title runs but nobody really cared, by that point the WWPA was an indy fed in and of itself. As the AGW experienced some troubles in 1999, Speed decided to start wrestling more frequently in it himself to build more interest. Unfortunately for him, he got a little too much interest and eventually Most Holy asked to lose the AGW World Title he held to Speed, whom he felt deserved it more than he did. A great show of respect from a great man, but Speed knew by that point that morale in the AGW was unbearably low. After asking Mark Payne to beat him for the World Title so it could have a final champ who deserved it, Speed closed the AGW down in January of 2000. Speed then tried to revitalize his career once more in the VWA, however a lot of egos caused that fed to collapse shortly after it's inception. Guys who were friends in the AGW started despising each other. Guys from other feds such as the TEW took exception to the AGW insurgence that got the VWA going, and this created a baseless hatred for the AGW and it's wrestlers due to sheer jealousy on their part. Some guys, including Speed, who were in the middle told both sides to shut up but to no avail. And with all of this, sadly the VWA was forced to go defunct as well despite some very exciting cards and great front office. Speed started the AGW back up in May of 2000, and despite an excellent first two months of action, things died down, BIG name wrestlers disappeared or were fired, and morale never really recovered from it, as the backstage leadership slowly dwindled. Wrestlers like Mark Payne, Most Holy, Shawn Michaels, Monarch, Tom Tennant and Blackhawk McKnight all tried as best they could to keep the AGW afloat, however as much as Speed respected the efforts of those who were trying to keep things going, he realized that now was not the time for the AGW, and he shut it down again in September of 2000. After a month of thinking things over, Speed decided to go where some of his loyal AGW wrestlers and friends already were, the UWL. He wasn't sure about joining it due to some past difficulties with a handful of UWL wrestlers, but Speed said he was over it and wanted to get back into the ring. But as he feared, the politics and lack of respect from his fellow wrestlers left him with no choice but to leave the UWL after only a couple brief months. After toying with the idea of bringing the AGW back, Speed decided against it and signed with Total Elimination Wrestling to mark the beginning of 2001. His numerous other appearances and busy schedule kept Speed to more of part-time schedule, but after a couple of months he did manage to win the TEW TV Title. But in July 2001, the TEW shut down and Speed went into virtual obscurity for about a year. While he wasn't actively wrestling between July 2001 and June of 2002, Speed was still very busy in the wrestling industry. He spent the entire time looking for financial backing for a restart of the AGW. Jaded by the Japanese investors from the previous experience, Speed pleaded with folks he know to invest their money in it. Many of these men and women are AGW alumni, such as Violet Morris, Tom Tennant, and Jake "Black Knight" Page. After getting their help in funding a new era of the AGW, Speed brought it back in June 2002. And this incarnation is still going. Speed, as usual, has been at the forefront of a number of controversial angles, promos and the like, but he wouldn't have it any other way. He's having fun, and the AGW's been getting respectable ratings and crowds. As for his wrestling career, he's done his usual amount of occasional wrestling for his AGW, but he is focusing most of his time on actually WRESTLING in the UWL and RUNNING the AGW. Some say Speed is in the best condition of his storied career, and he has the wins in the UWL to prove it. He is definitely at the top of his game, and hoping to make it to the top of the UWL, proving his MANY critics wrong in the process. Speed's wrestling career is long from over folks, so keep a look out on what the veterans can still pull off in the biz. Speed's personal life is also a lot better. He and his sister Rachel get along much better than they have in years. Her marriage to Tom Tennant created a rift between Speed and those two that has since smoothed over. Speed's also dating the woman who initially set out to destroy him and Violet, Kathryn Cash. This union has the endorsement of her rich father, Joseph, and in 2006, both are considered to be in charge of the AGW. This could mean trouble for certain competitors. But at the very least, it seems that Speed and Kathryn truly are in love. |
